Nasal Conditions in Children
There are some specific conditions of the nose seen in children. Increasingly common is nasal allergy which causes nasal blockage, a runny nose and irritation within the nose. This can effect a child’s ability to breathe at night, sleep properly and therefore effects their ability to learn and engage in physical activities. Nasal allergy can be associated with asthma and each these conditions can make the other worse if they are not under control.
Management of Nasal Conditions
An assessment in the clinic will attempt to establish the cause of the allergy to advise ways of avoiding the particles causing the allergy and also recommend the best treatment to reduce the symptoms. Medications and allergy avoidance are the first line of treatment for most children. Occasionally there are structural issues within a child’s nose. This may be due to an injury or a structural problem inside the nose that they have had most of their life. Surgery for nasal conditions in children is the last resort but this may be recommended depending on the cause of the problems. Surgery for the structural parts of a child’s nose requires careful consideration and this will be discussed fully in all cases before undertaking any procedure.
