Prominent Ear Correction (Bat Ear) / Pinnaplasty

Prominent Ear Correction (Bat Ear) / Pinnaplasty

Everyone’s ears are different in some way and no one’s ears look the same on each side. Despite this, some people become concerned about how they or their child’s ears look. Some ears are recognised as being more prominent and there are specific reasons as to why the ears may look this way. During an assessment for prominent ears, the various parts of the ear cartilage (pinna) will be assessed so that each of these areas can be addressed during surgery. Both adults and children wishing to improve the size and projection of their ears can benefit from this procedure.

Pre Operation

What to expect

During your consultation we will discuss the most appropriate and minimally invasive procedure to give you the natural look you desire. Ear correction can be performed under local anaesthesia whilst awake or general anaesthetic whilst asleep and takes around 60 minutes per ear. The procedure can be performed on one ear or both depending on the problem identified and commonly involves reshaping the ear cartilage using stitches to create the curves that have not formed.

Post Operation

After surgery

You will be able to go home on the same day as your procedure. You will have dressings and a head-bandage over your ears which will be taken off in 3 to 4 days. After this we would advise that you wear a headband for 24 hours a day for 1 week and then just at night for the following 2 weeks. Discomfort after surgery should be minimal and treatable by simple painkillers if required. A series of post-operative appointments will be made to check that healing continues correctly.
